"The Heart of Harlem" Nina Simone Illustration
The Heart of Harlem is designed as an advertisement for the date Nina Simone performed at the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969.
Every Sunday in the summer of 1969, Mount Morris Park became the cultural epicenter of jazz, soul and rock n’ roll. Organized by Tony Lawrence, 300,000 hopeful humans, black and beautiful, gathered in the heart of Harlem to hear the most talented voices and activists of their time.
It was a celebration of Black pride; a brave protest in the midst of political, civil and social uproar. The attendance rivaled Woodstock but most of us know so little about the Harlem Cultural Festival. Hidden away, erased for years and ignored by mainstream media, this event and the musicians who led it deserve recognition as originators in the evolution of American music.
One of whom was the “High Priestess of Folk and Soul,” Nina Simone. There is no musician more closely associated with the civil rights movement.
This art print of an original illustration by Nicole Bougie is made to order on 12 x 18 heavyweight matte paper stock.
